Presenter

FLorum welcomes presentations from students, faculty members, and researchers at HKU and other institutions. If you are developing a theoretical idea, working through a difficult analysis, or examining data that pose an interesting challenge for linguistic theory, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Presentations may address any aspect of formal linguistics, including:

• phonology;
• morphology;
• syntax;
• semantics;
• pragmatics; and
• research spanning more than one of these areas.

Contributions may be situated within a particular theoretical framework, compare multiple frameworks, or address the broader consequences of a linguistic phenomenon for existing theories.

Work in progress is welcome

You do not need to have a completed paper or fully developed analysis to present at FLorum. The forum is intended to support research as it develops.

Possible presentation topics include:

• an early-stage research project;
• a new theoretical proposal;
• an unresolved analytical problem;
• a puzzling dataset;
• a comparison of competing analyses;
• a preliminary argument or set of predictions;
• an empirical challenge for an existing theory;
• a discussion of literature with implications for future research; or
• an idea for a collaborative project.

Presenters are encouraged to explain which aspects of the project are still developing and to identify the questions on which they would particularly value feedback.

An adaptable format

Meetings take place weekly or biweekly, depending on the semester’s programme. FLorum currently has the following schedule for this semester:

The format of each session can be adapted to the project and its stage of development. A session might consist of:

• a research presentation followed by questions and discussion;
• a short introduction to a dataset or theoretical problem;
• a workshop-style examination of possible analyses;
• a discussion of a research proposal or developing argument; or
• a collaborative conversation about the next steps for a project.

FLorum aims to foster constructive discussion rather than evaluate polished performance. Presenters should therefore feel free to bring open questions, incomplete analyses, and competing possibilities.

Request a presentation slot

Please include:

• your name;
• your institutional affiliation;
• a provisional presentation title;
• a short description of the topic, data, or research question;
• your preferred presentation date or dates; and
• any accessibility or technical requirements.

For work in progress, a provisional title and brief informal description are sufficient. You do not need to submit a completed paper or formal abstract when first getting in touch.

Presentation requests from researchers at all career stages and from all theoretical perspectives are welcome.
