Audience
FLorum meetings are open to students, faculty members, researchers, and others interested in formal approaches to language. You are welcome to attend whether you are already working in theoretical linguistics, exploring the field for the first time, or simply curious about the topic of a particular meeting.
Meetings may feature presentations of ongoing research, discussions of theoretical literature, collaborative examination of linguistic data, or conversations about ideas for new projects.

What to expect
FLorum is a working group rather than a conventional seminar series. Although some sessions may begin with a structured presentation, meetings are intended to provide ample opportunity for discussion.
As an audience member, you may:
- learn about ongoing research at HKU and other institutions;
- encounter formal approaches from different areas of linguistics;
- ask questions about the data, analysis, or theoretical assumptions;
- suggest alternative explanations or relevant examples;
- identify connections with other languages, phenomena, or frameworks; and
- contribute ideas that may help a project develop.
You are equally welcome to participate actively in the discussion or attend primarily to listen.
Who may attend?
FLorum welcomes participants at all career stages. No particular theoretical affiliation is expected, and you do not need to be an expert in the framework or linguistic phenomenon under discussion.
The forum’s scope includes phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, as well as research that crosses traditional boundaries among these areas. Sessions may draw on a wide range of formal theories and analytical traditions.
